Don’t be a GAMER SHAMER

March 29, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Luke Langlois

This post is the first to come out of AJ’s week of editing, where the theme for posts is video games. In the following week, you will see more posts coming out in this theme as well.

When you hear the word “gamer,” what does your imagination picture? If my prediction is correct, it probably is not a pretty picture. Perhaps this “gamer” is in a room with closed blinds, no lights, and a locked door. Perhaps this gamer has untold quantities of empty soda cans sprawled out on the floor, not a bottle of water in sight. Perhaps this gamer’s keyboard is more dust than keyboard. This dust is not the typical brand of dust. No, it’s worse: Dorito dust. Whatever the picture may be, I’m sure it’s not positive. When industries rise, so do their critics. The rise of the gaming industry has followed this historical trend.

The term “gamer” does not carry a positive connotation; it is actually quite the opposite. Many media outlets are quick to jump the gun and mount an opposition against the newest gaming phenomenons, like “Fortnite,” calling them addicting, brain-melting, too violent, and detrimental to the overall health of the world. Gaming is almost always connected to being lazy or chronically unhealthy. But gaming should be recognized as a valid hobby, just like any other pastime such as golfing, moviegoing, fishing, or even knitting. After all, gaming is a juggernaut industry, and a “gamer” is not just someone who locks themselves in a dark room playing video games.

What would you consider to be the larger industry: movies or video games? Judging by the sheer influence that movies have on our popular culture, you might be guessing MOVIES! Indeed, the film industry pulls in large chunks of change. Last year, the international film industry pulled in a whopping forty-one billion dollars. That’s an impressive number. I personally would enjoy having forty billion dollars in my bank account. But, I would also enjoy having a bit more than double that amount. Oh, maybe ninety billion would be better? The gaming industry pulled in a bit more than that, at ninety billion dollars. That number represents the international revenue pulled in by the gaming industry. Not convinced that gaming is for more than just the hermit crabs of the world? GameSpot estimates, China has more people who play video games than the entire population of the United States. That’s over three hundred million people in just one nation who play video games. China is not the only video game haven; the United States has an estimated 211 million gamers (Variety).

Gaming is one of the premier hobbies of the world, and it should be recognized as such. There’s no reason to feel ashamed for really diving into a game, whether it be on your mobile device or your Xbox. Conversely, if you don’t play some type of video game, there’s no reason to spite those who do. After all, the non-gaming may soon be a global minority, if they aren’t already. Gaming is for everyone, and the numbers show it. So, don’t be a gamer shamer because gaming is not just a niche hobby anymore.

Fortnite may look goofy, but maybe it’s not so bad.

The Rise of Modern Esports

March 5, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Esports Specialist James Zheng

Esports is the abbreviation of electronic sports. “Electronic sports” generally refers to the mode in which the competitor utilizes electronic devices to play against other competitors based on experience. And, the common manifestation of electronic sports is in gaming sports, where players play against others with a team or individually. Esports was nevertheless really unknown and thought to be meaningless back in the day. But, is it a waste of time?

The reason that I decided to write this post is due to the things I found out a few days ago that made me realize how the realm of esports is actually pretty fascinating. I was browsing on a live-stream website, and then I saw these different game league matches. There were games held on two platforms: mobile and computer. And, when I observed those matches, they were conducted decently and scrupulously. It made me feel like a game was not just a “game.” With millions of fans watching games’ live streams and watching conversations about the players, it gave me a sense that esports are cooler than I thought. These games included League of Legends (a multiplayer game released by Riot Games), Warcraft III, Overwatch, and Dota 2 (all released by Blizzard Entertainment), etc. It shocked me that the development of esports could be this successful and popular. Esports is an industry.

The abundance of esports is definite. Earlier in 2000, a South Korean company directed the first worldwide event in esport history–the World Cyber Game, which included more than twenty games in the competition. It was held worldwide until 2013 (it revived in 2019 again); it was given the title “Esports Olympics.” Around America and Europe, the Overwatch League is taking place. Cities can compete against other cities–just like the NBA. In like manner, The League of Legends World Championship annual tournament is probably the biggest event in the realm of esports. Once The League playoffs start, there will be more than thirty countries playing live stream matches. After seeing these examples of esport play, I completely changed my view towards gaming, professional game players, and esports!

However, is playing esports professionally a realistic dream for everyone? The first thing we know is that we normally just play video games for entertainment, and before I had that amazing discovery on live stream, I never thought that playing a game could ever be a goal. Sometimes I just thought it too impractical. In contrast, the occurring of esports had begun a few years ago. I have seen cases in which a teenager live streams and plays video games every day instead of accepting education in school to pursue their goal. There are circumstances that some of them succeed in the end, but very few. The vast majority of players eventually abandon the idea of earning money at esports. If you are a pro player, you do not know when there will be a new, better player to take your position. Likewise, you also need to worry about the future of your team. There are still so many experienced teams who have already played for several years. When your team encounters them, it will be extremely hard to survive. And the result is only going to be the dissolution of your team.

The undeniable fact is that esports has sustainable support from billions of fans. And, as far as I can see, there is indeed a tremendous potential possibility within esports and the love dedicated by fans and players to play, to develop, to earn, to win.

Dead By Daylight Game Review–A Legion of Glitches

February 25, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Dayton Kennard

If you’ve been playing Dead by Daylight recently, you’ve definitely been hearing about the new Darkness Among Us downloadable content (DLC) and all of its problems, and if you actually bought it, you’ve been experiencing those problems firsthand. The sad part is you don’t have to download the DLC to experience the problems. Note: it should be taken with a grain of salt– not all of these problems are actually glitches. Through this post, I’ll cover four problems that have been reported by the community and problems that I’ve experienced firsthand. Just a heads up, if you haven’t heard of this game before, it’s basically a multiplayer game where four survivors try to fix five generators in order to escape before a killer finds them and–you guessed it–kills them.

Problem 1: Random Legion Chase Music

Some people have described that while they’re playing as a survivor against the Legion (one of the killers you can play as), they’ll randomly hear the Legion’s chase music (something that occurs when you are about to be attacked) for a few seconds before it suddenly disappears with no explanation. This has even happened to me! However, this is not a glitch. While playing as the Legion, a killer can bring in an add-on to their unique power that causes all survivors to temporarily hear chase music when the killer successfully lands an attack on a survivor.

Problem 2: Red Highlights After Chase Ends

When the Legion successfully lands an attack on a survivor while in their Feral Frenzy mode (their unique power that makes them faster for a short period of time), they will see nearby survivors highlighted in red temporarily so that they can easily attack them as well, but this highlight ends once the Feral Frenzy times out. Or at least, it’s supposed to. Sometimes the red highlight will persist if you continue to chase a survivor after Feral Frenzy times out, only going away if you either down the survivor or your chase with the survivor ends. This is most certainly a glitch, as nothing like this is mentioned in Feral Frenzy’s official description or any of the Legion’s add-ons.

Problem 3: Loss of Previously Purchased Characters

When players first load up the game after purchasing and installing the Darkness Among Us DLC, they may see that some of the characters they had previously purchased are now missing, and even be told that they have to purchase these characters again. This may be alarming to hear, and even more alarming to see, but it seems to only happen with characters purchased using Auric Cells (an in-game currency) rather than characters purchased with real money. This is a known glitch that’s already being worked on, and it’s easily fixed by closing and re-opening the game.

Problem 4: Two Killers vs. Three Survivors

This may seem impossible given the game’s unchangeable format of one killer versus four survivors, but it’s actually something that can happen. While this is a legitimate glitch, it is quite rare to see on accident, and it’s more likely someone causing this glitch on purpose. This is because the game will sometimes attribute the wrong character ID to a character that you are playing. So, while you joined a game as a survivor, you will load in as whatever character that ID truly belongs to, allowing you to join the game as a second killer rather than a survivor. Being that this problem only happens when a character ID is swapped, it’s fairly easy to replicate this glitch by editing the game files, which is usually what’s happening if you do see two killers in a match.

Review of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne—An Old Game That Will Never Fade Away

February 14, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By James Zheng

Blizzard, which is known as one of the most famous game-producing companies in the United States, has always striven to design the best games out there. But, the major game I am going to introduce in this post was from sixteen years ago. Unlike an anime or a movie, a majority of games tend to easily become old-fashioned or hackneyed. They last for at most ten years since games are always being published incessantly; this process is like an elimination system. You pay for the new, and drop the old. Some games survive, though. And, one of the survivors is Warcraft 3.

First of all, let me give you a basic description of this game. Warcraft is a real-time strategy game. The purpose is just as simple as this: you engage in a war to conquer your enemy by rallying an army. And, when it comes to strategic games, you might think that they are usually complex or difficult because you have to play it smart and pay attention to a lot of details. But, the fascinating thing is that you can come up with at least a thousand tactics, simple or complicated, to play based on the diversity of units. Units, also known as minions, are the main force of your army. They all have different capabilities. Warcraft 3 also has a simple game structure. To start a game, you choose one of the four races (Human, orc, etc.) to bring into battle. Every race has their unique advantage. If you want to build more advanced buildings or recruit more powerful troops, the game would explicitly indicate what you need to do. The most attractive feature has to be the hero system, or champion system. You get to select a champion you like to lead with. All of these factors are essential to reinforce the replayability, and are the reason that the game has survived so long.

The love for Warcraft 3 seems to hardly decay, and it may just keep growing. Recently, Blizzard has decided to make a “reforged” version of Warcraft 3, which, ironically is the game they had already given up on ten years ago. There is only one factor, the most important element, that keeps this game alive–the creative choices of the individual player. It is very easy to use mods in Warcraft. In addition, players have designed massive amounts of maps and new modes to keep this old game running. You can play with your friends, or endlessly compete with online players. In the end, Warcraft 3 is a game that is much more deep than a simple strategy game.

You might think that this game is too old to play, but, as I’ve said, it is a game that will never fade away. Check out the new reforged version!

Is time travel possible?

January 25, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By James Zheng, Blogger and Amateur Physicist

I know it’s kinda unusual to see a title like this, especially from an anime reviewer. As I was considering what anime is worthy of recommending, I came up with this interesting topic to share with you guys. Also, to interpret this topic in the best way there will be some physics stuff and technical terms, but I will not make this subject sound really complicated or ridiculous. What I will do is express everything in a simple way.

As the most intelligent beings on the Earth, humans have infinite ambition in the realm of science. An example of this is the invention of new gadgets. And one of the most controversial, or even most impractical ideas, is time travel. Describing time travel is just as difficult as unravelling a thousand threads twisted together since we don’t really have a solid concept of it, fundamentally. It’s a process of travelling to the past or future, which sounds absurd, right? So, this wonderful scientific idea contradicts with the Theory of Relativity (a basic theory about space and gravitation which also introduces all the special phenomenon in physics) and even disobeys the principle of nature (the most basic principle that applies to the whole universe about how things change).

Here is one of the biggest concerns, the temporal paradox, also known as Fermi’s Paradox. It could entirely negate time travel while also telling how time travel could lead to a false interaction between cause and effect. Simply put, there are many examples to explain what a temporal paradox is. Let me give a common example: let me assume that person A went back to his past, then person A killed his father (person B) before B got married, and the existence of person A turns out to be an unknown being since if person A killed his unmarried father (person B), person A would not have been born. The logic of this example is really clear; the cause is that person A killed B and therefore cannot be borne of B. In this application of temporal paradox, when we travel to the past, we can’t interfere with the reality in the past, similar to the principle of nature that humans cannot change something which already happened in the past; otherwise, it would create complete chaos.

However, as I mentioned earlier, mankind has limitless ambition. And, we would all agree that temporal paradox sounds absolutely reasonable and unattainable; actually the realm of science ignores one possibility, an assumption called parallel universe. At this time, let’s go back to that same example to explicate parallel universe. What would happen if A kills his unmarried father B this time? There will be two universes, or paths split from A’s life. One path is the history that B died, but another one is the original history that A can never change, and which means the truth that B died still remains but actually A will go to the path that B died and stay in that path. Moreover, parallel universe is not the only factor that could possibly debunk temporal paradox; there are plenty of other circumstances that could affect it.

Now let’s see how could we disobey the Theory of Relativity and principle of nature in a “correct” way. At first, you might see a few articles which claim if humans discover a speed faster than light, time travel will be plausible. But, all the evidence and reasons that they have given so far are just abstract. I am not criticizing them. Scientists often use sophisticated words and concepts that people cannot understand, which they normally would see as something impressive, so the majority of people just don’t get it. And, in my opinion, to produce a special phenomenon called a wormhole (like a tunnel that links two alternative timelines) and look for a high gravitational field will possibly accomplish time travel. Secondly, before I tell you how a wormhole works, I am going to explain it. A wormhole is a passage that connects two universes, which also refers to two time points so that it allows a person to travel through time, certainly a one-way trip (by the way, I write some extra crazy information about wormholes at the end of this article;, check it out if you want to). At some point, wormholes will definitely be a breakthrough if scientists find proof to validate them… wait… haven’t they proven it already? Although it’s only a hypothesis, it’s indeed a scientific theory that some well-known physicists such as Ludwig Flamm and Nathan Rosen were trying to prove.

How about high gravitational field then? First, there is one thing you need to know. On any planet, when gravity is elevated extremely high or low, the time is either slowing down or speeding up. Same as on earth, our standard comprehension about time is determined by gravity. As a result, time is vulnerable, by which I mean it has many flaws, perhaps when you go to a planet that is far away from the Earth, there will be a gigantic discrepancy of time between that planet and Earth. The discrepancy will depend on how different the gravity is as well so that decides how fast time moves.

Finally, I hope you liked this article written by an amateur who is truly interested in physics. All of the above views are absolutely my personal and subjective researched views. I do not mean to make this topic contentious, but please leave your comments or questions, or correct some places that you think I am wrong. I will happily respond.

Note: Here is the crazy information of wormholes. Theoretically, wormholes are space tunnels connecting two distant timelines, just like the whirlpools in the ocean, which are everywhere but short-lasting. These temporal and spatial vortices are caused by the rotation of the stars and the attraction of gravity. Just as a whirlpool can make the water surface closer to the bottom, it can make two local spaces which are far away from each other very close instantaneously. But some people assume that a certain dark matter can keep the wormhole open because some of them contain positive energy and negative mass at the same time; it can create a repelling effect to prevent wormhole closure.

Wanna make an elegant GIF or Video?

January 14, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Videographer Blogger and Influencer Jeremy Cheng

This is a subtle video. Focus on the leaf. Instead of a leaf falling, it’s rising. Below, Jeremy will explain how you can achieve this effect.

First, download two apps, PicsArt and Plotaverse.

Take any picture that you want to edit.

Open Picsart,  press “+” button, and choose the picture that you want to edit.

Press “Tools” and “Dispersion.”

Cover the shape that you want to disperse.

After covering the shape that you want to disperse, click the “Arrow” button on the right top side.

On the bottom of the page, there are five choices: “Stretch,” “Size,” “Direction,” “Fade,” and “Blend.”

Use them to adjust your image to a perfect shape.

After finishing this step, press “Apply” and “Next” on the right top side.

Save your picture on your device.

Open Plotaverse; press “+”  and “CREATE PHOTOGRAPH” button.

Click “+” button.

Choose the picture that you just edited on the PicsArt and press “Animate.”

You can enlarge your picture and set the arrows as many times as you need on your picture. The arrows will continue in the same direction.

Then, press “Anchor” to block the area where you want it to spread.

Finally, press the “Play” button so that you can see how the image spreads. Then, press the “Share” button on the top right side and save it to your devices.

Now you have a video as elegant as mine. Go forth and edit.

Do YOU want to be a Pokemon trainer?

December 14, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Jeremy Cheng, Pokemon Master

Before Thanksgiving, Nintendo published two new games for the Nintendo Switch called Let’s Go Pikachu! and Let’s Go Eevee! Check out the picture below.

They are both very similar games with a few small differences. Let’s talk about those differences.

Players will get either Pikachu or Eevee, depending on the version that you play.

When choosing Pikachu, we can yell, “Pikachu, I choose you!”

The Pikachu and Eevee that you get at the beginning are not going to “evolve” like most Pokemon do. But, the Pikachu and Eevee that you catch in the wild can evolve.

When using Pikachu and Eevee to enter a battle, the characters are not going to throw a Poke ball to release the Pokemon like in previous versions. Pikachu and Eevee will stand on the player character’s shoulders and jump into the battlefield.

Usually, Pikachu stands on the character’s shoulder, while Eevee sits on character’s head.

The Pikachu and Eevee you get at the beginning are called Partner Pokemon. They can learn special skills that other Pokemon are not able to learn.

In the older versions of the Pokemon games, when players want to catch Pokemon, players have to fight with the Pokemon that they want to catch and throw the Poke ball. In these two versions of the game, players only need to throw the ball. Like in Pokemon Go, there is no battle needed.

The first difference of these games is the outfits. In these games, players can buy different outfits for their partner Pokemon. The clothes that you can buy depend on the version you play.

Secondly, there are some Pokemon that only appear in one version of the game which means that players of both versions have to make Pokemon trades if they want to collect all the Pokemon. It provides a chance for players to be able to interact with other players and gives the game a community.

Players who have played Pokemon Go on the phone can transfer their Pokemon from Pokemon Go to Let’s go Pikachu or Let’s go Eevee.

There is an accessory called the Poke Ball Plus. Players can use Poke Ball Plus to walk their Pokemon in real life. Crazy!

As for me, I prefer Let’s Go Pikachu. When I was young, I imagined that I could have a Pikachu just like Ash, the famous character of the TV show who has the first generation Pikachu. This game lets me realize my childhood dream.

King of the Fighters XIII–A Review

December 12, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Game-Reviewer James Zheng

A great graphic quality, a realistic sense of hitting, a diversity of abilities from game characters, all these are key elements to decide if a fighting game is truly extraordinary. All these qualities apply to one of the most classic and famous fighting games in the whole world, King of the Fighters. This series has continued updating for nine years. The very first work of KOF (King of the Fighters) was born in 1994; from there it gradually became an overwhelmingly popular fighting game. SNK Playmore released more versions each year until 2003.

SNK Playmore had a long and tortuous course in the development of King of the Fighters. While they were trying to release the seventh work of KOF they had to fight off a piracy version and fake simulators of their games. SNK Playmore rose again and then pushed out their thirteenth work–KOF XIII–as an announcement to the world that SNK Playmore is back.

There are three parts which make this particular work so fantastic. First, the animated artistic style mixes with 3D modeling. The characters are incredible even if the whole game is a 2D fighting game. If you play a special movement (a characteristic ability besides punch and kick), the animation may include fire, sparkles, and lightning. Secondly, because there are so many characters from which to choose, the game offers plenty of fighting combos. Some of them also have a characteristic background that creates a story. Thirdly, this game would not fail in the sense of playability, which refers to a factor that decides if this game gets boring. Since this game requires so much skill, it might take you a long time to master a certain character, but do not get me wrong. What I said does not mean every single character is extremely hard. They all have the basic and advanced fighting skills waiting for you to dig them out.

Depending on your preference of using keyboard or controller (I would suggest that controller is better) to play the game, you can play KOF on Xbox or PC system. The game is sold for $20 on Steam.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR GRADE (NOT CLICKBAIT)

November 9, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Luke Langlois

Hello to all of my student friends. Today, I am here to introduce a handy-dandy tool, www.calculatemygrade.com. Grades are a mystical thing, and, honestly, who knows how to calculate it. Well, the answer is simple. It’s the internet. There are a billion-gazillion grade calculators online. The problem with all of these grade calculators is that they do not adapt to your individual situation. Most of the time, grade calculators are made for specific schools or systems, and they will not adapt to your grading situation. This website adapts to you. It lets you enter your own assignment, the weight of this assignment, and the grade you received on this assignment. This helps you figure out what you need to do grade-wise. Do I need to get a 100% on the next test? How many homework assignments do I need to offset the 5.3% I just received on this test? Well, for those who of us who love their grades, this is the tool. Here is a brief-ish set of instructions.

When you open up the website, you will see three options: “My overall course grade,” “What grade I need to get on the final exam to get an A, B, C or D,” and “What my new GPA will be after this semester.” Depending on your situation, you’ll pick what you need to pick. For me, the “My Overall Course Grade” option is the best. I have frequently used this option to find out what grade I need on a specific assignment to be where I want to be. So, for the purpose of this post, we’ll dive into that.

After selecting this option and pressing “next,” you will be hit with “is your final grade calculated with points or percentages?” You select how your teacher calculates the grade. For example, I know Ms. Zachik calculates her grades based on points and how many points you receive, so for her class, you’d select points. Most other classes are based on percentage, so for most cases you’d choose that, unless you know your teacher bases their class on points.

After selecting the grading system, you’ll be prompted to enter the quantity of assignments. If you have had two tests, enter two tests. This is pretty self-explanatory. If you want to know what you need on your next assignment to get your grade up to a certain point, add an extra assignment so you can add the hypothetical grade. If you have no assignments for a specific category, enter nothing or a “0.”

After this, you’ll be asked to enter how much each grade is worth. For this, you’ll need to find the syllabus for your class and find out what each assignment is worth.  IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to divide the weight of the category into how many assignments of that category you have had. That was confusing. If your tests are worth 60% of your grade, and you’ve had 3 tests, enter each one as 20% (which is the 60% divided by 3 if you have no idea where that number came from). As another example, if you have 7 homework assignments and those homework assignments are worth 10%, divide that 10 by 7. You’d get 1.4%, and each of the 7 homework assignments is worth 1.4% of your grade. If you enter each of the 7 grades as weighted by 10%, each homework assignment is going to be weighted as 10%, rather than the entire category as 10%. This is important for each assignment category.

Finally, you’ll be asked to enter what grade your assignment received. So, do that. The most handy part about this section is to enter a hypothetical grade for an upcoming assignment. As an example, say I had a 24% in AP Biology, what grade will I need on the next test to raise my grade to an A. Well, in the earlier processes I would add an extra test so I could now enter a hypothetical grade for said test. Then, I would enter in some grades to see if they’d raise me up to the grade I want. After you do this, you should hopefully get a grade that resembles something reasonable. In the case of wanting to raise my grade from 24% to 93, I would need a 300% on my next test. I would recommend entering your actual grades first to see if you’re doing the whole process correctly.

So, in conclusion, this website, www.calculatemygrade.com, will be most useful to you if you are a grade freak. If you’re not, you might keep it in the back of your head for when the final exams come around. Enjoy calculating!
